Composting Workshop - Iowa Waste Reduction Center

Primary tabs

This is not a library sponsored event.

Purpose of meeting. (If you checked the “Public” box above, everything in this section will display on the public calendar)

The training event will be split into two sections lasting a total of 2.5 hours to allow for attendees to participate in one or both sections.

Each section will cover 1) How to compost, and 2) How to use compost to remediate pollutants from entering local rivers, lakes, and streams.

Section 1

Learn how to compost by attending a 1-hour event that will cover best practices such as carbon to nitrogen ratios, moisture content, temperature, aeration as well as hands-on field exercises that includes measuring bulk density, free air space, and moisture content.

Section 2

The second section of the training event will last about 1.5 hours and will delve into using compost to remediate pollutants found in water flows that can enter and contaminate rivers, lakes, and streams. Communities that have a listed "impaired water" will benefit by learning how to install the following to capture polluted water flows, degrade pollutants, or bind (sequester) pollutants to make them immobile.

  • Compost blanket for slopes 1:1 or less
  • Compost socks for construction sites and areas with disturbed soils
  • Compost filter berms for areas with small concentrated water flows
  • Incorporating compost into soils to regenerate degraded soils and promote drought tolerance
  • Rain gardens for low-lying areas prone to standing water
  • Bioremediation for contaminated soils
